The video to the right shows the second itereation of the piece performed by The Ambassadors of Sound from Virginia Union University playing at 1708 Gallery's InLight in the Fall of 2021.

Premiering at White Space in Atlanta, Taking Place includes two videos of a marching band playing an unorthodox version of America the Beautiful, arranged by Daniel Solammon. The performance was filmed at the Old Atlanta Prison Farm on the border between the property owned by the City of Atlanta, and Intrenchment Creek Park, owned by Dekalb County. One video shows the musicians walking towards the camera and one shows the musicians walking away, such that the viewer is placed in between the two screens and has the experience of being in the middle of their performance. The sound is spacialized so that the viewer experiences the sensation of the musicians passing over them. The repetitive droning of the band is a not so subtle reminder that persistently playing America the Beautiful does not erase its history nor make it beautiful. Taking Place is a poignant reminder that the anthems and slogans that represent America have fallen out of sync with the reality of our country.
