Within Earshot is an interactive sound installation that expands the territory of the the space it occupies to anyone who can hear the sound of the 8 bells that hang from the steel frame. While the Atlanta Beltline connects 45 different neighborhoods and provides a transportation route for cyclists and pedestrians, the nature of the closed loop creates a boundary and a new interior and exterior space. Sound is not restricted by lines on a map, architecture, or even our own feeble attempts to close it out with our hands over our ears. The space of sound is its own territory. An eight foot tall steel structure with 8 bells of different sizes and pitches hanging from it, Within Earshot is invites the public to play the bells. The sound created by the bells creates a cacophony of noise that becomes part of the broader sonic environment.
